MAK Releases MAK Legion 1.1

MAK Technologies is proud to announce the release of MAK Legion 1.1 - the latest version of our Next-generation Scalability and Interoperability Framework. MAK Legion enables real-time distributed simulations at unprecedented scale - combining the best concepts from established modeling and simulation protocols with cutting-edge online-gaming techniques to manage and deliver millions of high-fidelity entities.
MAK Legion 1.1 makes it easier to manage and connect to high-entity count scenarios - through enhanced server-side Fine Interest Filtering.  We've also added support for absolute timestamping, multicast communications for radio and audio traffic, and various extensions to the APIs and built-in Object Models.

Fine Interest Filtering

MAK Legion has supported interest management since its inception - with clients subscribing to geographic regions, and the Legion Server determining which Sim Engines' Data Stores to synchronize with each client. This "coarse-level" filtering was quite efficient, but it often led federation designers to limit the number of entities on each Sim Engine (e.g. to 10,000) to ensure maximum performance, and it levied some of the burden of filtering on the receive clients. Legion 1.1's new Fine Interest Filtering allows the Legion Server to:

    • Extract specific entities from each Sim Engine's Data Store based on a client's interest criteria
    • Combine entities from different Sim Engines into a composite Data Store targeted to that client
    • Synchronize that composite Data Store from server to client in a single network message per frame

This enhancement allows users to simulate more entities with a smaller total number of Sim Engines - optimizing the use of memory and CPU resources - while also relieving clients of the burden of performing fine filtering on the receive side.

    Absolute Timestamps

Legion 1.1 adds support for "absolute timestamps" (similar to how the concept is implemented in DIS or HLA RPR FOM) allowing fast-moving, high-performance simulations to stay in sync more accurately when they are running on machines with synchronized clocks.

    Multicast Support

Certain high-bandwidth types of data are better suited to multicast best-effort networking when available (e.g. on a LAN) - including voice and radio traffic. MAK Legion now supports the ability to configure individual data streams to be transported using multicast - providing lower latency, and lower bandwidth usage.

    Variable Rate Updates

Some engines simulate different entities at different rates - e.g. pattern-of-life background entities may be ticked less frequently than more important military entities. Legion 1.1 gracefully handles engines that implement such optimizations.

    API and Object Model Updates

Legion 1.1 adds support for Aggregate objects, plus expanded built-in support for VR-Forces extensions, including more DI-Guy attributes, NAVAIDs, and weather and environmental parameters. It also allows easier tuning of dead-reckoning and thresholding parameters.
